What we keep, and how to make us stop.

Who this is

Outrider is run by Danielle Reilly in Nevada. It is one person, not a company with a privacy department. If something here worries you, you can write to me directly at outridertrails@gmail.com and I'll answer.

What we collect

Only what you type into a form. There is nothing hidden.

• If you sign up as a founding rider: your email, and optionally your name, town, state, how often you get out, and anything you wrote in the notes box. If you asked for a trail to be verified, that trail's name and roughly where it is.
• If you offer a place to stay: the property or business name, your name, email, phone, town, and the details you gave about the place.
• If you list with Outfitter: your business name, what you do, how far you'll travel, and how to reach you.
• If you RSVP to a ride: the name you typed, how many of you are coming, and a phone number only if you choose to give one. The phone field is optional and it exists for exactly one thing — so the person organising can text you if the ride moves or the road in is washed out. It is shown to that organiser and to nobody else, it is never used to market anything to you, and leaving it blank does not stop you coming. An invite still never asks for an email or an account.
• If you turn up to a ride: the organiser can mark you as having been there, so the ride has an accurate record of who came.

Our host reads standard web server logs, which include IP addresses, for security and to count visits. There is no advertising tracker on this site, no Facebook pixel, and no Google Analytics.

Location, and the Outrider app

The app uses your location for two different things, and it is worth being plain about which is which.

• To show you what is near you. When you open the trails, camps or map screens, the app asks your phone where you are so it can list the closest things first. That position is used on your phone to sort a list. It is not sent to us and not stored anywhere. Say no and the app still works — it shows the area we cover instead.
• To record a ride, if you ask it to. This one is continuous, and it is the reason the app asks for background location.

Recording a ride

Recording only ever starts when you tap start. It never begins on its own, never on opening the app, and never in the background without you having asked for it.

While a recording is running the app writes down where you are every few seconds, including when your phone is locked and in your pocket — which is the whole point, because a trail you rode with the screen off is still a trail you rode. A red bar stays visible across the app for the entire time it is recording, and on Android there is a permanent notification as well. You should never be recording without being able to see that you are.

It stops when you stop it. There is no timer, no automatic restart, and nothing that resumes a recording without asking you first.

The points are kept on your phone as you ride. When you finish, the route is saved to your Outrider account so you can see where you went and, if you choose to, so it can help build the trail's page for other riders. If you never tap start, no route is ever recorded.

What we do not do with it

• We do not track you across other companies' apps or websites. Nothing here is shared with an advertising network, a data broker, or anyone building a profile of you.
• We do not sell it. Not to anyone, at any price.
• We do not watch where you go when you are not recording. Between rides the app is not interested in where you are.
• We do not publish your home. If you want a recorded route trimmed before it goes anywhere — because it starts at your yard — ask and we will trim it, or delete it outright.

You can turn location off for Outrider at any time in your phone's settings. The app carries on working; it simply cannot tell you what is nearest, and it cannot record.

What we do with it

• Email you about Outrider. Rarely, and only when there's something worth reading.
• Work out where to build first. Knowing that eleven people near Gardnerville want the same trail verified is how the map gets prioritised.
• Get in touch if you offered a place to stay or a service, so we can talk before anything goes live.

Who else can see it

Two companies hold the data because they run the machinery:

• Supabase stores the database.
• Netlify serves the website.

They process it on our behalf and don't get to use it for anything of their own. Nobody else has access. Signup lists are locked so that only a moderator account can read them — an ordinary visitor to this site cannot pull anyone's email address out of it.

How long we keep it

Until you ask us not to, or until it stops being any use. If Outrider never launches, the lists get deleted rather than left lying around.

Getting rid of it

Email outridertrails@gmail.com and ask. You can ask us to:

• tell you exactly what we hold about you,
• correct anything that's wrong,
• delete all of it,
• or just stop emailing you but keep your place in the queue.

You don't have to give a reason and it won't be made awkward. I'll confirm when it's done.

Children

This isn't built for children and we don't knowingly collect anything from anyone under 13. If you think we have, tell me and I'll remove it.

Photographs

The photos on this site are ours, or the managing agency's shown with their credit. Number plates and documents are obscured before anything is published. If you spot something that shouldn't be visible — yours or anyone's — tell me and it comes down that day.

When this changes

Outrider is being built, so this page will change as it does. The date at the top is when it last did. If something changes that genuinely affects you, you'll get an email about it rather than a silent edit.
